Monkton Senior Sports

The sporting opportunities at Monkton offer pupils both the chance to pursue a sport they love to the highest level and a programme that offers breadth for every pupil to enjoy.

Sport and physical activity are embedded into school life through curricular, co-curricular and enrichment opportunities, and this enables stretch and development for every pupil.

SPORTS Development at Monkton

Your sporting journey grows with you over your time at Monkton.

Year 9

In Year 9, each term you will pursue one of our main sports (rugby, hockey, netball, cricket and tennis), with twice-weekly training and matches mid-week and on Saturdays. Alongside this you have the chance to try a broader spectrum of sports through the Enrichment Carousel and practical PE lessons, from swimming to table tennis, dance, athletics and badminton. Rowing is available all year round through the enrichment carousel.

And if that still isn’t enough, you can choose from a variety of sporting clubs that run 4.15pm-5.30pm each week, offering a large range of sporting options including time to go deeper in our main sports and build your strength and conditioning.

Year 10-11

You begin to exercise more choice, with some students opting for rowing for one or two terms, and choosing between cricket, tennis and athletics in the summer term. You can opt to study PE at GCSE, and the sporting opportunities in our co-curricular clubs continue, with many of our athletes using these additional sessions to hone and sharpen their skills.

Year 12-13 (Sixth Form)

For many, the focus remains on team sports, with our students pushing themselves to reach the top teams and pouring their energy into rugby, rowing, hockey, netball, tennis, cricket and athletics. In our main sports we usually have three to four teams, and so whatever your level, there is a team for you.

For others Sixth Form offers the opportunity to pursue other ways to be active, from swimming to squash, badminton to basketball, golf, running and padel to strength & conditioning and more.  Wherever your passion lies, our highly experienced sports department, spearheaded by our Heads of Sport will help you grow and develop, enhanced by professionals from Bath Rugby, Bath Buccaneers Hockey and Team Bath Netball, providing expertise and inspiration across our sports programme.

The choice of which sports to pursue is up to you, and our students relish the opportunities on offer.

To support your development, you will have access to our own gym and bespoke Strength and Conditioning programmes, supported by excellent coaches from our own staff.

External Partnerships

Our close proximity to and ongoing partnerships with the international-standard facilities and sports programme at Bath University enrich create further opportunities that many of our students enjoy to the full, accessing various clubs and regional development sides, including Bath Buccaneers Hockey, Team Bath Swimming, Team Bath Netball and Bath Athletics Club.

And we are therefore able to invite high performance coaches in from these clubs to work specifically with our pupils.

Top Performance Athletes
We regularly support students playing at the highest level of sport, such as international representation. We work closely with you to create a bespoke programme to enable you  to balance the demands of high performance sports alongside your broader education and support your aspirations. In recent years we have supported the development of performance athletes in sports as diverse as skeleton bobsled, netball, hockey, rugby, triathlon and freestyle football.
