Leadership Development | Monkton Combe

Leadership Development

All our students have increasing opportunities for leadership in Year 12 and 13, from academic, co-curricular and pastoral mentoring, to leading the houses, CU and school in a variety of ways.

You become the mentors, role models and inspirational people that you once looked up to, and continue to embed the Monkton ethos of service, humility, confidence and integrity.

Monkton Leadership Award

Academic achievement, whilst vital, is only part of what future success requires in a rapidly evolving world. Learning to lead yourself and others is a key skill for life. All Year 12s participate in the innovative and interactive Monkton Leadership Award. You will begin to understand yourself and others more fully, learn key leadership skills and habits, and have opportunities to practise and embed those skills in a variety of settings.

We have four core beliefs around leadership:

  • Leadership is a skill you can develop
  • The heart of great leadership is service
  • Great leadership needs rigorous self-awareness and self-reflection
  • Great leadership can change the world for the better (in big and small ways)

And four strands to the Leadership Award:

Monkton Lectures

Each year we invite outstanding guest lecturers, with a huge range of experiences and fields. You will be expected to reflect on what you hear, and capture this to help you grow in your own leadership.

Recent speakers include local MP, Anna Sabine; Major General Joe Fossey (Director of Recruitment for the British Army & Monkton parent); Old Monktonian and AvP at NASDAQ, Bitania Mulugeta, TV presenter, Paddy O’Connell and extraordinarily successful Director of Bath Rugby, Johann van Graan

Learning from a huge range of world-class speakers who have all learned how to lead is an amazing opportunity.

Interactive Workshops
Led by our in-house leadership team and superb external speakers, we will help you grasp essential leadership skills and qualities.
Service

Service is a Monkton core value and we believe that the heart of leadership is serving and developing those you lead. You will spend half a term serving in a local primary school to enable you to experience the joy and importance of service to others, as well as learning how to grow in that area and what it means for leadership.

Leadership Role

The best way to truly embed your learning is to put it into practice immediately, so Year 12s have the chance to apply for a range of leadership roles within the school. Throughout the year, you will use your learning from workshops and lectures to improve and grow as a leader in discussion with the Head of Leadership and your tutor.  Alternatively, you can create your own leadership project.  Pupils who fulfil all five strands are assessed and can achieve either pass, merit or distinction in t.he Monkton Leadership Award.

Leading the School

In Year 13, you continue to develop and refine these skills as you become a vital part of leadership within the school, whether in your house or in the wider school community. You will take on large leadership projects, such as running House Music, creating your own House Dinner, mentoring younger pupils, leading the Christian Union or becoming a school prefect. With support from your houseparents and senior school leaders, you are equipped to lead effectively and, more importantly, to leave school with a strong foundation in leadership, both in the skills you have learned, and in understanding that you need to keep learning, reflecting and growing to become a truly great leader.
