Where Will Monkton Take You

Where Will Monkton take You

There is no standard pupil, no one-size-fits-all outcome and there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Monktonian.

When our students leave the Sixth Form, their paths are many and varied. Many head to leading British and international universities to pursue subjects as diverse as Medicine, English, Economics, History, Architecture, Business, Mandarin, Biology, Engineering, Modern Languages, Liberal Arts, Computer Science, Politics & International Relations.

I personally have found this approach exceptionally freeing. As a result I have tried activities, such as singing, which previously I had not had the confidence to do. Monkton is far more than just a school. Coming here was truly one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

The supportive and accepting community of Monkton enables students to push boundaries and explore new skills through teaching that failure is a normal part of learning.

In the creative fields, we send students to the best Art & Design schools every year, studying a range of subjects including Fine Art, Fashion Design, Photography and Product Design. Others pursue performance courses at top conservatoires and drama schools.

Some prefer to explore Degree Apprenticeship programmes in a range of areas.

Monktonians make their mark as leaders, inventors, pioneers, athletes, missionaries, counsellors, campaigners, writers, thinkers, midwives, financiers, entrepreneurs to name just a few.

What is true across the board is that each pupil has been developed, stretched and enabled to expand and then fulfil their potential, so they can choose the path they want.

MEDICINE - MERTON COLLEGE, OXFORD

The Medicine Programme at Monkton  gave me the guidance and support I needed to pursue this path. Teachers showed empathy and flexibility around workload during the Oxford application process and  went the extra mile to adapt lessons to my needs and interests. The opportunities beyond the classroom from ophthalmology work experience to inspirational guest speakers all added to the preparation that Monkton gave me, and I was able to pursue my other passion, music, which gave me a more rounded experience.

FIRST CLASS BA (HONS): FRENCH & CHINESE STUDIES  - UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM

I was really taken with the range of subjects available at Monkton, especially when it came to languages. I started earning French in the Prep School and took on Mandarin at GCSE level – both of which I carried through to my degree, which included stints in Martinique and China. This early exposure to languages, alongside truly lovely teachers and a fun syllabus, sparked a lasting interest in cross-cultural communication. I graduated last summer and am now working in travel PR in London, and I love it.

My time at Monkton was one that I will cherish for the rest of my life, especially the two Sixth Form years. I arrived at Monkton from Egypt as a 14 year old who, unsurprisingly, was overwhelmed and frankly scared by the idea of being in a boarding school away from home. However, the amount of support and care I was shown at Monkton from my teachers and houseparents squashed those feelings almost instantly.

I had always been interested in science and the body so choosing my subjects (which were Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Arabic) was fairly straightforward with the aid of my incredibly helpful teachers and their advice.

Two years on, I was using every single one of those subjects studying Pharmacy at Monash University in Australia and doing translation work on the side for newly arriving refugees from the Middle East.
