Passion, Progress & Performance

Our approach centres on participation and personal growth. We focus on these attributes because they not only lead to excellence but also develop character.

Every pupil, regardless of experience or ability, has the opportunity to play, learn and fall in love with the game. Through Rugby, we teach pupils how to compete with integrity, show resilience, and celebrate both effort and success in equal measure.
We have Old Monktonians earning professional contracts and current pupils gaining regional and national recognition, but whether our pupils are seeking to pursue rugby at the highest levels, or enjoying it as a school sport, we want all them to experience the enjoyment, friendships, and sense of belonging of  Rugby at Monkton.

Boys’ Rugby

During the Michaelmas Term, Rugby is a key games option for boys, with strong participation and depth across every age group from U14 to Senior. We regularly field multiple teams, ensuring every player has the opportunity to represent the school.

A full preseason programme prepares players for the competitive term ahead, with fixtures, tournaments and cup competitions providing exciting opportunities to test themselves. Each session and match day is designed to be challenging, enjoyable, and memorable -  celebrating the best of Rugby culture at Monkton.
Accessible and Inclusive

We believe Rugby should be accessible to all. That’s why we offer a range of playing formats throughout the term, including contact, modified contact and touch rugby. This allows pupils to experience the game in a way that suits their confidence and stage of development.

Whether taking the first step into Rugby or pushing for representative honours, every Monktonian finds their place on the pitch.

Girls’ Rugby

Our Girls’ Rugby programme, introduced in recent years, continues to grow rapidly. Focused primarily on the 7s format during the Lent Term, the girls’ teams have shown fantastic enthusiasm, skill development and competitive success.

With more pupils joining each year, our aim is to build a lasting legacy for Girls’ Rugby at Monkton, combining skill, spirit and the joy of team sport.

Recent OM Eliza Davies is now playing for Heriots Women in the Scottish Women’s Premier League and part of the U21 Scotland Women’s set up.

Sevens Rugby

The Lent Term also brings the excitement of Sevens Rugby, offering pupils another chance to refine their skills and compete at a high level. The season culminates in the prestigious Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s Tournament, where both our boys’ and girls’ teams proudly represent Monkton on the national stage.

Partnerships and Pathways

We are proud to maintain strong links with Bath Rugby, with several pupils involved in their development pathway and age-grade teams. Recent Old Monktonian Jack Bennett, who played for Bath and England U18 in his time at the school, went on to earn a professional contract - continuing a legacy of excellence that inspires our current players.

Beyond Bath, Monkton pupils and alumni have represented county and professional sides across the UK, reflecting the high calibre of our Rugby environment.

Innovation and Player Welfare

Player safety and wellbeing are at the heart of what we do.

In 2023/24, our 1st XV took part in a Bath University and England Rugby trial of the Activate Injury Prevention programme. In collaboration with Bath University, our 1st XV, U16A, and U15A teams now wear instrumented mouthguards - cutting-edge technology that collects data to help the RFU and global governing bodies make Rugby even safer for future generations.
