Hockey
Hockey is huge at Monkton with both our boys and girls teams thriving and enjoying success and challenge.
Hockey is one of Monkton’s major sports, and over the years we have seen incredible strength in depth across both the Boys and Girls teams, and have seen a number of pupils move through regional and national Hockey pathways.
Girls
Our Girls Hockey takes place in our Michaelmas term games provision, giving our players the opportunity to train twice a week alongside midweek and weekend matches. Our Seniors (Years 11-13) regularly field 4 teams in fixtures, with lots of development opportunities for our younger players, and leadership roles for our Year 13s.
The season begins with pre-season training, giving our teams the opportunity to gel together ahead of regular fixtures. The calendar also sees our teams play in Hockey festivals, Cup Competitions and annual tours.
Our Juniors (Years 9 & 10) play in age group teams, with an A and B team for both U15 and U14. This provides the foundational training and match experience needed as these Girls move through to the Senior teams. We also field an U16 team in regional tournaments, giving our Year 10’s and 11s the opportunity to play tournament Hockey.
Boys
Our Boys Hockey takes place in our Lent term games provision, and follows a similar format to the Girls. Pre-season Hockey gives the teams the chance to polish their skills and teamwork ahead of the season, which sees training twice a week, accompanied by midweek and weekend fixtures, along with tournaments and Cup Competitions throughout the term.
The Seniors (Years 11-13) field 4 teams in fixtures, with training both in teams and mixed, giving all development opportunities, and our Year 13s the opportunity to take on leadership roles.
For tournaments, we also field an U16 team, made up of U16 and U15 players. Our Juniors (Years 9 & 10) play in A and B teams for both U15 and U14 age groups, giving them the platform to develop their skills both individually and as teams before moving into Senior Hockey as they journey through the School.
We also take U18 and U16 Girls and Boys teams to Indoor Hockey tournaments, challenging our players to think differently and adapt their skills to the indoor game, with great success.
Each year also brings our OM Hockey event, seeing Old Monktonian hockey players return to Monkton to play against each other and the School team. Our alumni love to come back to play hockey in the valley where they honed their skills, and it always proves a fantastic and competitive morning for all!
