Boarding Life | Monkton Combe

Boarding Life

Monkton provides an extraordinary home for all our boarders, where every pupil is known, valued for who they are, and finds a place to belong, rather than needing to fit in.

We are deeply intentional about building community, so all our houses are integrated, bringing together pupils, both boarding and day, from all ages. The richness this provides for everyone is so valuable. For our boarders, the evening and weekend community is vibrant, with day pupils bringing variety and freshness, and the close-knit friendships from Year 13 down to Year 9 often last well beyond school.

In House Nights

These are highlights for many of our pupils. Twice a week each house enjoys “in house” nights, either gathering as a whole house, or in smaller year group gatherings, with Houseparents and house teams, to play games, share food and have fun together. These weekly moments help build deep connections between boarders and day pupils, with peers and the older and younger members of each house.

Weekend Programme

Monkton, unlike many boarding schools, has a thriving weekend programme. Most of our boarders are full boarders, and, far from emptying at weekends, many of our day pupils  also stay to join in the huge range of options on a Saturday evening, whether for our own football world cup competition, bonfire night, band night, Sixth Form parties, balls for years 10-13, house dinners, international cookery nights, and many more.

Sundays are a flexible day, offering space to relax, or fun to be had. Brunch runs till 1.30pm, enabling a slower start to the day. Minibuses take pupils to various churches in the morning and the short journey into Bath in the afternoon. A range of activities are available on-site, and every few weeks there is a bigger trip: paintballing, ice-skating, Thorpe Park Theme Park and more.

Houseparents

Monkton's houseparents are so dedicated to each and every pupil. They are appointed, quite deliberately as houseparents, working together as a couple to create a home from home for every pupil.

Parents often comment on the strength of having trusted adults speaking into their child's life, particularly when they are away from home during the teenage years, and the sense of belonging that they build is palpable.

PREP (homework)

Each evening we provide dedicated time to study, with teaching staff offering supervision and support in a variety of subjects.

The Art and Music departments are also regularly open during Prep, to enable pupils to access the materials and facilities needed.
