Monkton Combe School, Bath UK Admissions

Why Choose Monkton

Students from overseas have been an important part of Monkton for many years, with students arriving from all corners of the globe.

Monkton provides a nurturing environment as the foundation for academic success. Most of our international students join us to pursue their academic journey with us to A Level, but a number also come for a year to focus on learning English at both Senior and Prep schools.

Further information

Guardianship Information
Every pupil whose parents are based overseas needs a guardian, to provide support and step in when you are not able to. If you do not have a relative or friend based in the UK, who is willing to act as guardian, there are guardian agencies who provide accommodation when school is not in session, or if your child needs to be absent from school for some reason, such as illness. Costs of these vary.
Travel arrangements
At the end of each half term, we work with Chauffeur Travel, an airport transfer company.  Where possible they will group pupils together to travel to airports such as Bristol, Gatwick and Heathrow, to reduce the per person cost. Costs for these will vary depending on the distance to the airport and the number of pupils travelling at the same time.
Visas

If your child requires a visa to study in the UK, there are costs associated with obtaining and renewing the visa. We will work with you through the process.

Monkton Combe School is a licensed sponsor for the UKVI for international students applying for a child student visa which applies to international students wishing to come to the UK to study. When the offer of a place at Monkton has been accepted and the deposit paid, the School will provide the student with a Certificate of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) letter. A Child Student Visa Compliance charge of £180 will be added to the termly fee invoice for all students who are sponsored by the School for child student visa purposes.

Further information regarding applications for child student visas can be found at www.gov.uk/child-study-visa or by contacting the school's nominated immigration specialist partner Sable International. Sable is our trusted partner for all child students and UK Immigration applications. The company has been providing immigration services for over 30 years and is regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner. We have retained Sable’s services to ensure all UK immigration applications are prepared in compliance with UKVI requirements.

Entrance requirements

Along with many other top independent schools in the UK, Monkton Combe School uses a cognitive ability test (CAT4). The test is the UK and Ireland’s most widely-used test of reasoning abilities, which measures verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning.

In addition to the CAT4 test,  students with English as a second language complete a written EAL paper, and provide their most recent school report. Alongside this, we will request a reference from their current school once we have been granted permission by a parent/guardian.

Once all of the tests and references have been received, the documents will be forwarded to our Senior Leadership Team for review. They will advise if the applicant can move ahead to an interview, which will either be completed in person or online.

English as an additonal language (EAL)

We have an experienced team of specialist language teachers who provide 1:1 or small group lessons for international pupils for whom English is not their first language.

When you arrive you will be assessed in reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar, to determine   academic English proficiency.  The aim is for students to exit EAL when they have reached the required language level for full and confident curriculum access, based on our ongoing assessments.
