On our unrivalled and award winning playing fields, pupils' development and successes are built on the foundation of Monkton’s strong sporting tradition which is committed to providing an extensive sporting programme focussing upon participation, as well as excellence. We produce at least two teams in every age group in each of the School’s major sports: rugby, hockey, rowing and cricket for the boys and hockey, netball, rowing and tennis for the girls. Many pupils find their strengths in other individual and team sports including athletics, basketball, badminton, golf, squash and swimming, which focus not only on fitness, competition and discipline, but also well-being and mental health.
We travel across the South West for fixtures and have had real success with developing a different focus on challenging all pupils to become creative decision-makers, adapting to the evolving demands of each of their sports.
Sport has always played a major part of life at Monkton and our alumni boasts of a number of Olympic Gold Medalists, Commonwealth Gold winning captains and international sportsmen and women in a wide variety of disciplines; we compete regularly in the finals of the national tennis championships; have pupils moving on to full scholarships at American universities; have elite equestrian performers, athletes and cyclists that all gain from the support of the School and our location close to the University of Bath and its renowned Sports Training Village which allows us to build worthwhile and sustainable relationships.
Coupled with this, we run a phenomenally successful rowing programme out of our two boathouses that gives both participation and elite opportunities at the National Schools’ Regatta and Henley. We have pupils who have been chosen to compete regionally, nationally and internationally and we have a proud history of rowing success.
Inter-house competitions in a wide variety of sports are eagerly supported and our reputation as excellent hosts sees us welcome friends from around the globe who regularly return to Monkton as part of UK tours, whilst also embarking upon annual international tours ourselves, most recently to Spain and The Netherlands. Our calendar always contains entries highlighting our involvement in the numerous sporting festivals and tournaments we attend across the UK.
