Why do Monkton offer Scholarships?
Monkton offers a wide range of scholarships to support pupils as they pursue their passions and to impact their peers by modelling excellence in a wide variety of disciplines. It is really important to understand at Monkton that we value each and every pupil at Monkton and want them to thrive and will look to support everyone, whether they are a scholar or not.
My child is currently a Scholar at Monkton: do they need to reapply at each entry point?
No, they automatically continue as a scholar until they leave Monkton as long as they continue to meet the expectations of a scholar. If they wish to enhance the financial award a pupil is receiving they would need to apply at either 13+ (year 9 entry) or 16+ (year 12 entry) as per the deadlines on the website.
Does my child need to do Dance, Drama and Music for a Performing Arts Scholarship?
No, they generally choose one discipline to be assessed in. As with all our pupils at Monkton we will always look for different ways to develop them beyond their main discipline if they are interested in doing so.
My child is at Monkton and I think they should be considered for a particular scholarship programme but they are not moving towards a natural entry point. What should I do?
Email their tutor or relevant head of department and we will get back to you to let you know if we think they have demonstrated the standard required. We will then conduct an interview and informal assessment if required and, if successful, will offer them a place on the Scholarship Programme and they will be able to attend the trips and on site activities. They will not be able to benefit from an enhanced financial award until the standard entry points.
Can I apply for a Scholarship in addition to additional financial support from the school?
If you are in receipt of a financial award either as a bursary or in receipt of CEA the scholarship would not normally provide further financial support but would be subsumed within the existing award. Those who have been awarded scholarships would be considered for a bursary if their financial circumstances mean they would not otherwise be able to afford the fees.
Do you publish the assessment criteria?
We are looking for Scholars to embody the values of Monkton of Courage, Integrity and Humility. They also need to be role models demonstrating excellence in their chosen fields that add value to and serve the school community. Specific criteria for different scholarship areas are listed in that section of the website. We don’t provide further detail because we see it as crucial that this doesn’t become an assessment pupils are prepped for, but rather, they engage with and enjoy the day, and become excited about growing and developing at Monkton.
Are there any past papers that we can use to help prepare?
We don't publish past papers as we don't want to increase the anxiety over this; we want all pupils to feel these assessments are not something that need extensive preparation.
How many scholarships can my child apply for? How many can they be awarded?
We encourage children to apply for no more than 2 scholarships and will be awarded at most one award. This allows them to focus on developing this area. However this does not preclude them from fully engaging in all the different opportunities across the range of school activities. We also recognise that children may change their scholarship area as they develop through the school.
My child has been awarded an 11+ scholarship. How long does it last for?
An 11+ scholarship awarded at either Monkton or All Hallows would be honoured all the way through their time at Monkton until year 13. We also recognise that children grow and develop and so in discussion with parents we may look to change or adjust the award depending on their development through the school.
Are scholarships available to students who are just here for a year or less?
Yes. They would need to follow the same deadlines and process as everyone else and if they are overseas on the assessment day, we will communicate alternative ways to evaluate their performance in their chosen field.
Can my child change the scholarship pathway that they are on?
Yes, at Monkton we recognise that children change and develop and we want the scholarship to adapt with them. Provided they meet the standard required for a particular scholarship area we would look to meet their request to transfer.
If we are only planning to come to Monkton for the short term, can we apply for a scholarship?
Yes, Scholarships are available for all pupils arriving into year 7,9 or 12 and applications should be made through the website. If your child is arriving into a different year group and is exceptional in a particular discipline you should contact the admissions team to explain your situation.
How does Monkton benchmark at 13+ & 16+ against existing award holders?
Benchmarking is done through a combination of the expert knowledge of staff and where it is appropriate we create ensemble or team situations with existing scholars as part of the process.
Does my child need to be reassessed at each stage?
No, only if there is a desire to apply for an enhanced award.
If my child receives a 5 or 10% award at 11+, is it possible to have an increase at 13+?
Yes, this will be done by Monkton staff liaising with relevant colleagues at Monkton Prep and All Hallows to understand what has developed since the original assessment. It is not unusual for young people to develop at different stages and someone who was not successful with an application at 11+ being a strong candidate at 13+ or 16+.
