The Expressive Arts scholars of Monkton took on London to discover more about the worlds of Theatre, Music, Ballet, and everything in between.

Our journey commenced with a smooth coach ride filled with anticipation and lively chatter as we ventured towards the heart of the capital. Upon our arrival at the picturesque Somerset House, we were welcomed by representatives of Askonas Holt, one of the world’s leading arts management companies. They specialise in classical music - an incredible opportunity for the musicians amongst us to get a glimpse behind-the-scenes of the support given to some of the world’s leading musicians.  Here, we learned all about the complications of music tours, the process of scouting, (a very detailed process that can occur over many years, just for one artist!), as well as what makes the perfect conductor for an orchestra.

We had so much fun at Somerset House that we were late for our next backstage tour: the iconic Royal Opera House. This meant we got stuck straight into things, ending up in the orchestra pit 5 minutes after walking through the door!  We learned all about how the thousands of costumes are maintained, how they manage to change the whole set everyday, and that they have a lift built by Rolls Royce that can raise a 12-ton articulated lorry to stage level to help with set changes!  We were also taken to see one of the elegant ballet studios that the performers prepare in. After exploring the majestic halls and behind-the-scenes spaces, we gained a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship and dedication that brings operatic and balletic masterpieces to life.

Of course we couldn't return to the valley with empty stomachs, so we also paid a visit to KFC and Burger King on the way back! Thank you so much to Mr Mainwaring, Mrs Winfield, Mr Wilson-Lambert, and Miss Price for the amazing opportunity to go on this trip.
