13+ Performing Arts

Year 9 entry

Monkton’s Performing Arts scholarships offer a range of exciting opportunities in either Dance, Drama or Music. Selected students are given further opportunities beyond Monkton’s extensive co-curricular programme to develop their artistic passion.

We are looking for students with the potential and drive to become highly skilled individuals, who will share the talents across the Monkton community and beyond. They will be offered an exciting range of challenges and experiences, including the chance to work with industry professionals and venues.

The programme will provide scholars with:

  • Development time with faculty staff
  • Access to specific talks and workshops
  • Masterclasses with professional musicians, composers, actors, dancers etc
  • Bespoke trips to some of the UK’s leading arts venues - recent visits include the Royal Opera House, the BBC, and Askonas Holt Management
  • Links with institutions such as Bath Spa University and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

HOW TO PREPARE

Two weeks before the assessment day you will send in a pre-audition video in one of the following areas:

Dance: One dance piece (can be from an established choreographer or self-choreographed), between 1 - 1.5 minutes.

Drama: One performance piece around 3 minutes, or a portfolio of recent work for those wishing to apply as a writer/actor.

Music: One piece around 3 minutes (around the standard of Grade 5*), or a portfolio of recent work for those wishing to apply as a composer

 



Scholarship Assessment Day 

Depending on the students' chosen area of specialism they will have one of the following assessments:

Dance

  • Performance piece around 2 minutes in length** (can be from an established choreographer or self-choreographed).
  • A directed dance exercise and an interview.
  • Interviews within faculty and with Principal
     

Drama

  • Performance piece around 3 minutes**
  • An improvisation exercise and an interview
  • Interviews within faculty and with Principal
  • Interviews within faculty and with Principal
     

*Candidates do not need to have passed an exam, or be working towards one. The requirement is that the technical difficulty of the music offered is similar to that required to successfully perform Grade 5 pieces.
**The live performance piece should be different to the piece submitted on video.

Please note that the audition will be recorded for internal moderation purposes. This will be deleted at the end of the process.
