PE
Encouraging a love of physical exercise and activity
At Monkton Prep, we aim to instil and encourage a love of physical exercise and activity, which will lead to our pupils enjoying a healthy lifestyle in later life. There are two complementary strands, PE lessons and Games.
PE lessons are used to teach skills at their most fundamental levels and use a wide variety of sports to encourage development. These are centred around motor skills within a context of team or individual sports, spatial awareness, co-ordination and biomechanics at a simple level.
The Games element revolves around the major sport of the term. In the Autumn Term, the boys play rugby while the girls play hockey; in the Spring Term, hockey is played by the boys and the girls play netball; in the Summer Term all pupils do athletics with the girls playing rounders and tennis, and the boys playing cricket. The extensive facilities and grounds allow for plenty of pitch space and coaching areas. The gym is well equipped and a good size for the age group. The superb Clarke Swimming Centre provides a modern 25 metre pool, a dance studio and a fitness suite (for Members of Monkton Sports Club). We also have an outstanding All Weather Hockey facility which provides one full-size and one half-size pitch.
Matches are played in the major sports against local schools at all levels. Where possible, each child is encouraged to represent the School at least once a term. Other sports are offered as activities and these include judo, horse riding, golf, trampolining, table tennis and softball.
