Monkton Combe School is seeking an exceptional Junior Performance Coach to join our thriving sports department.
Based out of two boathouses at Dundas and Saltford, Rowing has a glorious history at Monkton, boasting Olympic, World and European Champions, and school teams competing regularly at National regattas. Rowing remains a unique offering at Monkton, from developing from the early stages into a highly technical, fitness based sport that demands fine-tuned teamwork and strong mental resolve. The results speak for themselves. For the past two years we have qualified teams for Henley, and many other boats have achieved regional and national success. We also have a number of pupils who have been selected to compete regionally, nationally and internationally, both whilst still pupils at the School and later on as Old Monktonians.
In the role you will represent Monkton Combe School and support the school’s objective of providing excellent standards of sport throughout all interactions with parents and pupils, providing a friendly and professional manner, while also upholding and applying the Monkton School values and missions statement. You will be joining a hardworking and friendly Sports department, working closely with the Head of Rowing to deliver our rowing programme across the school.
Responsibilities will include:
Strategic
- Supporting the Head of Rowing to develop technical, tactical, psychological and physical skills specific to their sport at Monkton.
- Working with the Head of Rowing on safety and club compliance within the National governing bodies frameworks for clubs.
- To support the Head of Rowing in delivering Monkton’s co-curricular aims of breadth, participation and excellence.
- Use passion, patience and sport specific knowledge to encourage all pupils to develop a lifelong love of sport and capitalise on their potential.
- To support the maintenance and evolution of the boathouse. Experience of some manual handling, power tool use, basic shell/fitment maintenance, independent rigging appropriate to school age athletes would be highly desirable.
- To support the Head of Rowing in building strategic relationships with local club/university programmes.
General
- To support the Head of Rowing in delivering high quality coaching and training across participation and competition groups, in particular taking a lead on the junior age group (Yr9/10) and developing the key foundational skills in rowing that will allow all students to develop physically, race to a competitive level and stay healthy during the demanding training programme in their senior years at school.
- To be available at weekends and evenings to support coaching, racing and associated transport
- Support the Head of Rowing to actively promote Monkton Sport using Social Media, Monktonian, Newsletters etc.
- Provide 1:1 coaching of students outside of their lessons where deemed appropriate by the Head of Rowing. This may include video analysis, personal development plans, strategic planning towards key competitions etc.
- With support from the Head of Rowing, lead on the yr 9 enrichment activity across the school year. This will include planning a curriculum of introductory skills delivered in a logical order and leading on safety of the sessions following guidance in British Rowings Row Safe document.
- Support the Director of Sport with any cross department initiatives as deemed necessary from time to time.
- Experience of towing trailers would be desirable, in particular on the continent.
- A PB2 licence would be desirable. Experience of driving motorboats would be essential.
- A UKCC level 2 Sliding Seat Rowing Coaching qualification would be highly desirable with a L3 being desirable.
- Any demonstrable experience of leading a group of rowers in an educational setting including the planning, delivery and review of a training programme and individual performance would be highly desirable.
Other
- To be involved in the wider life of the school through boarding duties, tutoring etc.
- For the right applicant further boarding responsibilities could be offered which may come with accommodation.
