Boys boarding House
School House is about helping boys to develop their different abilities and character within a supportive and caring Christian environment. One of the key roles of our senior boys is to ensure that new boys quickly feel welcomed and grow in their confidence. Weekly in-house nights enable the boys to build strong friendships throughout the different year groups and plenty of fun is always had by all.
David and Tanya Coulson became houseparents of School House in September 2013, having worked closely with James and Olivia Shone the previous year. Having studied chemical engineering at university, David became a chartered chemical engineer working in the oil, gas and nuclear energy industry for seven years in London and Aberdeen. He then chose to do a PGCE course and spent the majority of this teacher training at Manchester Grammar School before joining Berkhamsted Collegiate School.
David and Tanya met through leading on Lymington Rushmore Holidays and they began their married life living in a large boys’ boarding house; David as the Resident Tutor and Tanya commuting to London working for a Publishing company. Harriet, Francesca and Rory were all born in Berkhamsted and during David’s eleven years at the school he served as a Housemaster of a boys’ senior house and then of a co-educational sixth form house. They moved to Seaford College in West Sussex in 2005, where David was Head of Sixth form and Head of Chemistry and Tanya was Assistant to the Bursar at Westbourne House Prep School in Chichester. In January 2012, David was appointed Head of Science at Monkton and Harriet, Francesca and Rory all joined Monkton. Tanya also joined Monkton in June 2012 as PA to the Deputy Heads and her office is ideally located adjacent to School House.
