An oustanding environment for teaching, learning and student research
In 2008, Monkton opened its £4m state-of-the-art Maths and Science Centre. The building is designed to very high specifications and this, in conjunction with excellent resources, provides an outstanding environment for teaching, learning and student research at all levels, both now and for many years to come.
The facilities enable the teaching of maths and science in stimulating and innovative ways at Monkton. The introduction of a mentoring scheme for Sixth Form students, the appointment of visiting scientists and the establishment of a Council of Reference of distinguished scientists who are committed to supporting the development of these subjects are three exciting initiatives which have recently been launched.
In Year 8, students study a science course following the National Curriculum which aims to complete much of Key Stage 3 teaching by the end of Year 8, ahead of national schedules, in order that GCSE teaching can begin near the start of Year 9. Emphasis is given to securing scientific understanding while developing practical skills.
All students in Years 9 to 11 study GCSEs administered by the AQA exam board. The course enables students to gain three GCSE qualifications in the separate sciences or two GCSEs in Science and Additional Science, dependent on their ability in the sciences. Entry requirements for studying a science at A level are included under each science subject.
