Offering a range of superb facilities

At the Senior School, we have superb sports facilities from our own boathouses on the River Avon to our beautiful rugby and cricket ground, Longmead. Monktonians play sport and represent the school with commitment during fixtures, sport it is important at our school and we encourage all our students to participate to the best of their ability whatever that may be. Pupils at Monkton will be pleasantly surprised at how many opportunities there are to participate in sport and PE. The school is fortunate to be able to offer the following facilities for the pupils to use during both timetabled lessons and extra-curricular activities.

  •        Sports Hall (including a weights room)
  •        All Weather Sports Pitch for hockey and tennis
  •        4 rugby pitches/2 cricket squares
  •       18 tennis courts including 6 grass courts
  •       2 squash courts
  •       25 metre indoor swimming pool
  •       2 Boathouses, both on the River Avon with one for senior and elite crews.

PE is a compulsory subject until the end of Year 9 and Games are compulsory for all pupils up to Year 13. Every pupil is given at least 4 hours of PE or sport in any week.

During Senior Games there are also a range of more diverse activities that those in Years 12 and 13 can select such as badminton, running, fitness, swimming and squash; pupils who opt for rowing are required to participate for 2 terms.

All pupils should be competent performers at school team level and be interested in watching, reading about and discussing sport. The theory and practical sections are very much interlinked. In the theory modules, students study anatomy and physiology, training methods, psychological factors affecting performance, health and safety issues, factors affecting participation, the organisation of sport in the UK and contemporary sporting issues. The practical sessions focus on development of skills, analysis of performance and developing sport related fitness.

A level

The course focuses on 'participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle'. The specifications are designed to allow candidates to develop an understanding and appreciation of the factors that enable both them and others to be physically active as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle. The factors studied will include physiological, psychological and socio-cultural aspects that have an impact on participation and performance in physical activities.
