Mandarin Chinese is spoken in its native country, the People’s Republic of China, by over 1.3 billion people. The written form of Chinese used in China known as Simplified Chinese, is the unifiying form of communication across China and Chinese communities across the globe.
Mandarin is the official language of the People’s Republic of China as well as the Republic of China (also known as Taiwan); it is one of the 4 official languages of Singapore and one of the 6 official languages of the United Nations.
Mandarin is undoubtedly one of the most important languages to learn today and for the future.
How is the course structured and assessed?
Mandarin is studied at Monkton Senior School over a 5-year period, beginning as a compulsory subject in Year 9, with the option of continuing to GCSE. In the early years, alongside studying the rudiments of the language, both spoken and written form (Simplified), pupils learn about Chinese history (ancient and modern); Chinese culture including the differences between China mainland and the Overseas Chinese community and even look at Chinese political history, vital to understanding Modern China.
In line with the other European languages offered at Monkton, the course for Mandarin Chinese is divided into four modules: Lifestyle, Leisure, Home & Environment and Work & Education. Each module is subdivided into different topics and pupils study the vocabulary and grammar structures relevant to each topic. The GCSE consists of: Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening exams. Depending on ability, pupils will sit either Foundation (max GCSE Grade 5) or Higher Tier (max GCSE Grade 9).
Mandarin is also offered at Monkton Prep School from Year 3 but pupils wishing to choose Mandarin as a GCSE option in Year 9 are encouraged to join the Year 7 activity group. Our Prep School pupils also learn about Chinese history, culture and language through activities and games. In addition they learn basic reading and writing skills in Chinese.
At present only available to native speakers of Mandarin or Cantonese.
