At Monkton we make French fun! The emphasis is on practical skills for use in specific circumstances. Our aim is to enhance understanding and expression in French - increasing vocabulary and the ability to use it accurately. We use songs, film, games and a course book to ensure that all pupils not only enjoy learning French, but are also able to gain high grades at GCSE. We hope that, on completion of the course, each pupil is able to communicate effectively in a French speaking country. In year 10 there is the opportunity to participate in a French Exchange. The exchange programme has been running successfully for the last few years, and after a week’s stay in Lille, Monktonians have returned with a renewed enthusiasm for language learning.
Students will need a B at GCSE - an A would be even better. It is hoped that students will have visited France and have some ideas about the culture! We recommend they spend at least one holiday with a French family. Having an opinion about everything is also very useful! Students are encouraged to speak French in class at all times. At AS, students study the Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living, and Family and Relationships. At A2, the course covers the Environment, the Multi-Cultural Society, Contemporary Issues and a Cultural Topic.
