Giving students an understanding of the dynamics of business activity

Business studies image

The Business Studies class regularly visits local businesses.  Pictured above is a visit to the Marshfield Ice Cream factory.

This course covers a broad range of topics which will help students understand better the world of work as well as the various functions of businesses. The course aims to give students an understanding of the dynamics of business activity. This is rooted in current theory and it reflects the integrated nature of organisations and their decision making processes. Students will learn to make effective use of relevant terminology, and how to apply their business knowledge to many different case studies.

The teaching covers 6 areas: Business in the Real World, INfluences on Business, Business Operations, Human Resources, Marketing and Finance.

A level
Although a GCSE in this subject is helpful but not essential, we do hope that all students will have an interest in current affairs. Students will investigate different types of organisations in various business sectors and environments recognising the fact that they face varying degrees of competition; identify business problems; plan appropriate investigations into such problems; promote a holistic understanding of business and enterprise; make justifiable decisions using both qualitative and quantitative methods, taking into account opportunity cost. The course consists of a linear specification which explores the four functions of business: Operations, Finance, Human Resources and Marketing; in addition to, studying the impacts the external environment has on business decisions; the strategic nature of decision making.
