A broad and rigorous curriculum
As Monkton's outstanding exam results over the last few years demonstrate, inspiring academic ambition is one of our key priorities. Our students work hard and are well motivated, being supported and encouraged through the care and enthusiasm of our gifted teachers, who are committed to delivering lessons that are lively and enjoyable, as well as being rigorous and demanding. A student will meet his or her Tutor once a week, one-to-one, to discuss progress and set appropriate targets. Strategies for supporting gifted and talented students are well established and are continually updated and extended. There are also dedicated centres which provide for individual students who need Learning Support or teaching in English as a Second Language. For further details on all the subjects we offer, please refer to the downloads in the Admissions section.

Years 9 to 11
We aim to offer our students a broad curriculum in the lower year groups to enable them to keep options open for as long as possible, particularly for selection of subjects to GCSE. The curriculum reflects the spirit and fundamental goals of the National Curriculum in placing its focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics and the Sciences while allowing wider options suited to individual need. In addition to the core subjects, most students take four further GCSEs selected from a range of options. Students are encouraged to develop the sorts of skills - resourcefulness and self-awareness - which will help them to be successful in the sixth form and beyond. Personal and Social Education, (which we call Personal Development), Physical Education and Religious Studies are included in the curriculum. Decisions about the subjects an individual student should take are made only after extensive consultation with Tutors and parents.
The Sixth Form
Almost all students stay on for A levels. Great care is taken by Tutors, teachers and other careers staff, with the help of Careers Aptitude Tests, in advising students and parents over the choice of A level subjects. Twenty-nine courses are offered in the sixth form. In addition to their A level subjects, almost all students follow the Extended Project Qualification A-level course as well as an exciting series of lectures given by some highly eminent speakers. The transition to sixth form study is challenging, and we run an extensive induction programme throughout the first term of year 12 which covers topics such as 'the different rhythm of sixth form life', 'using study periods effectively', 'what it means to read around your subject', and 'what I wished I'd known last year', given by a group of year 13s. We give extensive support in making choices about life after Monkton, including studying at university, and, because we don't consider the relationship to end when a student leaves, the OM (Old Monktonians) Club often visit recent leavers at their universities around the country.
