Embracing the full breadth of the maths curriculum
Inspired by the National Numeracy Strategy, from Year 3 to 8 pupils will experience the full breadth of the maths curriculum preparing them for senior school specific requirements. As part of this curriculum, pupils are also encouraged to develop investigative thinking, solve puzzles and carry out practical mathematical problems. Mental arithmetic has been for some years a requirement in the Common Entrance exam and pupils are encouraged to develop their skills in this area.
Pupils have access to the ICT Centre with an extensive range of software, and all mathematics classes have one or more computers which pupils have access to as well as use of an interactive whiteboard.
Children are taught in sets by staff from Years 3 to 8. The top set prepares pupils to take either the higher level of Common Entrance or a Scholarship exam to their chosen schools and there is a further two sets preparing pupils for the Common Entrance exam. Both individual and in-class support is provided by the Learning Support Department and by classroom assistants.
