Instilling a sense of past heritage
History is a very popular subject here at the Prep. A core subject in the National Curriculum, history instils in pupils a sense of their past heritage so that they can put it into perspective and enable them to understand the values and traditions of our society and others. Pupils become more broad-minded and tolerant of other ideas, creeds, people and viewpoints. They also gain an understanding of both human actions and conditions in the past, how they have changed through the past and the reasons for those changes. We also hope that pupils will gain an understanding of argument, case presentation and the nature of evidence.
Class teachers deliver the syllabus in Years 3-4. In those years, pupils are given a general sweep through history with topics such as the Victorians (taking advantage of a nearby Victorian school) and World War II with a trip to the Fleet Air Army Museum at Yeovilton.
Bringing history alive is essential and a Year 7 trip to Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey is supplemented by trips in Years 3, 4 and 5. Visits from various historical characters including a Roman soldier, a World War II soldier, a Tudor gentleman and an Archer are eagerly anticipated by the pupils!
