Studying place, space and environment
In a world where conservation, environmental, economic and planning issues are constantly discussed in the media, young people need to know and understand the basis for the arguments and opinions put forward. Geography therefore explores the relationship between the earth and its peoples, through the study of place, space and environment.
With lessons from class teachers in Years 3 and 4, and by specialists thereafter, children are encouraged to enquire and investigate, communicate their findings and develop skills in predicting outcomes. They undertake field work in Year 7 in preparation for their Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations in Year 8, and are given a study project suggested by the School. They then have to use skills developed in other curriculum areas such as Science, Mathematics and ICT, as well as learning important lessons about producing longer pieces of work requiring self-motivation and organisation.
