Bonjour mes enfants!

Monkton Prep School pupil on a trip to ParisAt Monkton Prep there is a clear emphasis on oral courses of study in the early parts of the school, especially in Year 3. Pupils learn through sound and repetition, in as natural an environment as possible, through games and play. Pupils start to write the French they have learnt when they enter years 4 and 5. The now familiar system of 'listen, understand, imitate, speak' is continued, with games and ICT being used alongside CD and video recordings of the children themselves performing role plays and dialogues with each other.

The Métro course book is used in Years 5 and 6 to support the skills of listening and speaking, reading and writing. In class, the target language is used as much as possible, as children and even visiting staff, are expected to communicate in French when asking everyday questions.

The Common Entrance syllabus is accessible to all pupils allowing for different levels of performance, with the more capable taking on the demands of scholarship work. The course book 'Expo' is used in Years 7 and 8 along with a variety of other resources in order to fully support the requirements of the Common Entrance and Scholarship syllabi.
