Giving children the opportunity to show their creativity
Design and Technology at Monkton Prep is an exciting subject, giving children the opportunity to express themselves and show their creativity. The important elements are that it is an enjoyable and stimulating subject taught in a relaxing environment, which encourages children to improve their skills in both designing and making, whilst giving them an understanding of how things work.
Our purpose built Design and Technology facility has been set up to enable design and construction in a range of materials such as stiff flexible sheets, resistant and mouldable materials, electrical and mechanical components, textiles and metal.
All pupils will cover at least two 'Design and Make Activities' a year, as well as undertaking hand drawing design skills. CAD software is available for use by all children from years 4-8 and internet access is available at all times for research purposes on the 12 computers within the classroom. There is also a Computer Aided Machine (CAM) which allows children to cut out their designs in a range of vinyls and fabrics.
'Design and Making Activities' will include a variety of made up problem solving challenges and some real life examples from organisations. Children will have the opportunity to work both on their own and as part of small groups. They will be encouraged to evaluate and take pride in their work and explore their imagination and creativity.
