Developing skills in analytical thought
Latin is taught to all pupils from Year 6 upwards. Despite declining in popularity over recent years, Classics remains on the syllabus at Monkton Prep. We believe that Classics in all its forms teaches children a way of learning, it helps to develop skills in analytical thought and it also engenders an enthusiasm for this particular historical period.
The demands of the syllabus are tough and scholarship candidates may be required to attain GCSE standard. Greek is taught to all pupils up to a point (usually the alphabet and some names) but when there is an opportunity, the language is taught up to Common Entrance Level. Background studies form an essential part of the syllabus, with myths in Year 6, the Roman Republic in Year 7 and the Empire and Roman Britain in Year 8.
