Tom triumphs at Blenheim
Tuesday, 13 September 2016
Year 10 pupil Tom Griffiths and his pony Jay won the 90cm Arena Eventer Challenge, for Wylye Valley Pony Club at the Blenheim Horse Trials last weekend. Tom and Jay, were last to go of the team of 4 riders - the first 2 when clear with times almost at the optimum set time for the course. When the 3rd rider then had 2 poles down, it was all down to Tom to go clear with an equally good time….he managed it and they ended up first out of 35 teams from across the UK.
They were riding on behalf of the Wilberry Wonder Pony charity, set up in memory of a fellow Wylye member, Hannah Francis, who died last month from a rare bone cancer aged 18. Because of this, they attracted a lot of publicity as well as a few Olympic Eventers! By the end of the day, they were buzzing with excitement!
Tom has been riding since he was 5 years old. He is an active member of Wylye Valley Pony Club and regularly competes successfully in a variety of disciplines: Show Jumping (qualified for National Pony Club Championships this year), Eventing and Tetrathlon, which is shoot, swim, run and a cross country ride. He has won 3 competitions this season as well as qualify for the Winter National Triathlon Championships (shoot, swim and run).
He is sadly having to move his current pony on, as he has grown (!) so is now looking for a new partner to continue to take him onwards. We are also looking forward to representing the school in future events.
The win at Blenheim last week, has been his biggest achievement to date and one he will never forget.
He is photographed here during the competition and with his team mates and head officials from Pony Club, British Eventing and the main sponsors.
