Dr Dan Roiz de Sa (second left) with Monkton pupils
We were delighted to welcome Dr Dan Roiz de Sa to the Senior School last Friday to give our 150th Year lecture in the Chapel. Dr Roiz de Sa is responsible for running the Armed Forces Heat and Cold injury clinics working for the British Royal Navy as Senior Medical Officer in Survival, Thermal, Environmental Medicine and Sciences at the Institute of Naval Medicine.
He spoke powerfully about his experience of working as a doctor during expeditions to the most extreme environments in the world including the Allied South Pole Expedition.
"I wanted to give the students a bit of inspiration that when things are really hard, things are really achievable. It doesn't really matter whether it's in your studies or in sport, or doing extreme expeditions like we have done an awful lot is achievable. Being told no, doesn't mean something is impossible. Actually quite often it is possible."
It was also a wonderful connection to Monkton’s past in this special year reminding us of Old Monktonian Lieutenant Colonel Eric Marshall who was also a doctor on the infamous Nimrod Expedition to the South Pole led by Shackleton in 1907.
Many thanks to Dr Dan for an inspiring and fascinating talk.
