Monkton students celebrate record breaking GCSE results

Thursday, 25 August 2016

For the second year in a row Monkton students have achieved stunning GCSE results which have broken the school’s records for A* grades. Similar results last year placed the school in the top 20 co-ed boarding schools in the country.

40% of all grades this year were A* and 70% were awarded at A* or A grade.

Monkton’s pre-eminence in Mathematics continued with a quarter of the year taking a GCSE in Further Mathematics. Of those 20, three-quarters gained the highest grade - an A* with Distinction.

Half of all pupils taking French or Art secured A* grades, over 90% of those taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics secured A or A* grades and more than three quarters gained an A or A* in English.

Four pupils gained a clean sweep of A* grades Lily Riley, Tommy Sharpe, Jack Wood and Charlotte Drosten. A quarter of the year group gained all A* or A grades, and a quarter gained 8 or more A*s. Three quarters gained at least one A*.

April Collins, whose entrepreneurial flair won her an award for her fledgling tea business earlier in the year, was celebrating with 10 As and A*s.

Chris Wheeler, Principal, commented “Our GCSE pupils must be congratulated on these excellent results which have broken all previous school records at A* grade. These results are down to the pupil’s hard work, alongside our proactive pastoral care and outstanding efforts from our teaching staff.”

“To beat our previous year’s results which were themselves record breaking for the school and put us in the top 15 co-ed boarding schools in the country is extremely good news. I am delighted for all our pupils and their families who will be celebrating these wonderful results today.”
