Update June 2016

We are delighted to report that the Charity Committee raised a staggering £9,021.40 for Wherever the Need through various Charity events across the school.  The Cheque was presented last weekend and will contribute to valuable work of the Charity.

February 2016

This term, the Charity Committee  launched Wherever the Need as the School’s new Charity of the year. Based in Limpley Stoke, this charity provides eco-toilets in areas that have no sanitation.

Unbelievably, 2.6 billion people don’t have access to a toilet. Without toilets, sewage pollutes drinking water, spreading illness and disease. Those most affected are among the world’s poorest, often sick, unable to work or attend school, remaining trapped in a cycle of poverty. A child dies every 17 seconds from a sanitation-related illness, a situation Wherever the Need is working hard to change by building life-saving eco-toilets. The impact is clearly shown in this clever animation.

Monkton is partnering Wherever the Need this year to build a toilet block for a secondary school in a very poor district in southern India. As usual, the main thrust of the fund-raising will come from the pupils in their charity weeks. Alongside their efforts, the Charity Committee  will be holding their biennial Great Sponsored Swim in the summer term, at which colleagues and their children are very welcome.

Louise Kirby-Garton, Chief Executive of Wherever the Need, said after a visit to Monkton; “I so enjoyed meeting all of you. Please pass on my thanks to all of the students and especially the Charity Committee. What a very impressive group of young people they are."

One of the first of the charity fund raisers saw Year 11 boys selling red roses pre-Valentine's Day this Sunday. A lot of smiles all round before the half term break.
