Head of Academic PE (maternity cover)

Monkton Combe School is seeking an inspiring, strategic, and high-energy Head of PE to lead our PE department from September 2026 for up to 1 year as maternity cover. Nestled in the beautiful Midford Valley, Monkton isn’t just about winning trophies (though we do like those); it’s about fostering a lifelong love for movement, resilience, and wellbeing in every pupil.

The successful candidate should also be confident in coaching Hockey and Netball, the major sports that you will be required to lead junior and senior teams in. PE teachers are fully involved in the coaching of the games programme.  

You would be one of two full-time teachers in the department and would have a real opportunity to get to know the pupils and establish good relationships. Experience of teaching A-level Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics and A level NEA would be beneficial, but not essential. We are passionate about making Physical Education applied and relevant to current sporting affairs, bringing the subject to life beyond the classroom, and knowing this is important in stretching our students interests, opinions and perceptions. Senior Gardener

Full Time | Permanent
Salary: £28,000 per annum

Monkton is seeking to appoint a Senior Gardener to join our dedicated grounds and gardens team, working across our two school sites on the outskirts of Bath.

This is a key role within the team, combining hands-on horticultural expertise with a leadership remit. You will take a decisive role in the planning, prioritisation and forecasting of future grounds and horticultural work, helping shape the long-term presentation and development of the school’s outdoor spaces.

A core aspect of the role will be leading the design, planning and delivery of seasonal planting schemes and floral displays across beds, tubs and hanging baskets, ensuring the grounds are maintained to an exceptional standard throughout the year.

The successful candidate will bring a strong horticultural background (ideally NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture or equivalent), alongside pride in high-quality presentation and a proactive, organised approach to grounds management.

 


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain high-quality turf through mowing, aeration, top dressing and overseeding.
  • Operate specialist grounds machinery including mowers, tractors and utility vehicles.
  • Deliver high standards of maintenance across flowerbeds, including planting, pruning, weeding and general upkeep.

Grounds & Gardens Operative

Full time, permanent

Monkton is seeking to appoint a full time Grounds and Gardens Operative to join our dedicated and talented team working across both our school sites based on the outskirts of Bath. The successful candidate will come with a background in Horticulture, desirably holding NVQ2 Amenity Horticulture or NVQ2 Grounds maintenance equivalent, and will have a pride and passion for ensuring the schools beautiful grounds and gardens are maintained and presented to an exceptional standard throughout the year. 

We also welcome applications from those without qualifications but who would like to gain their qualification through an apprenticeship. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in Horticulture or Grounds maintenance, who will have the exciting opportunity to carry out personal development and training through an apprenticeship scheme.

 

Key responsibilities

  • General gardening, turf care, grass cutting and similar work which may include heavy lifting.
  • Maintenance and preparation of grass tennis courts, including mowing, marking, rolling, brushing and renovation works.
  • Maintenance of artificial sports surfaces, including brushing, cleaning, infill management and basic repairs.

Sport Performance Coach (Netball)

 

Salary: £18,000 per annum (depending on if accommodation is provided)

Hours: Average of 25 hours per week, term-time only

We are seeking a dedicated Sport Performance Coach (Netball) to support our whole-school approach to sports excellence. You will join a hardworking department committed to breadth, participation, and performance. This role will work with the Head of Netball & Tennis to deliver the Netball programme across both the Prep and Senior Age groups, whilst reporting to the Director of Sport and the Head of Prep Sport.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver the Netball programme across both schools, potentially visiting feeder schools like All Hallows.
  • Foster a lifelong love of sport in all pupils.
  • Provide regular feedback to the Head of Netball & Tennis on pupil progress.
  • Work directly with performance teams and sports scholars.
  • Offer 1:1 or small group coaching sessions.
  • To assist with the development of the Netball pathway from Prep years through to the Senior teams.
  • Utilise IT resources and video analysis to monitor and improve performance.

Essential Requirements:

  • A degree qualification or equivalent.
  • Recognised coaching qualifications.
  • Strong technical knowledge and high-level playing ability.
  • The flexibility to coach pupils aged 8–18 of varying abilities.
  • Competency in IT systems for performance monitoring and video analysis.
  • A clean, valid driving license to move between school sites.

Monkton Combe School is seeking a Junior Performance Coach to join our thriving sports department.

Based out of two boathouses at Dundas and Saltford, Rowing has a glorious history at Monkton, boasting Olympic, World and European Champions, and school teams competing regularly at National regattas. Rowing remains a unique offering at Monkton, from developing from the early stages into a highly technical, fitness based sport that demands fine-tuned teamwork and strong mental resolve. The results speak for themselves. For the past two years we have qualified teams for Henley, and many other boats have achieved regional and national success. We also have a number of pupils who have been selected to compete regionally, nationally and internationally, both whilst still pupils at the School and later on as Old Monktonians.

In the role you will represent Monkton Combe School and support the school’s objective of providing excellent standards of sport throughout all interactions with parents and pupils, providing a friendly and professional manner, while also upholding and applying the Monkton School values and missions statement. You will be joining a hardworking and friendly Sports department, working closely with the Head of Rowing to deliver our rowing programme across the school.

Responsibilities will include:

Strategic

  • Supporting the Head of Rowing to develop technical, tactical, psychological and physical skills specific to their sport at Monkton.
  • Working with the Head of Rowing on safety and club compliance within the National governing bodies frameworks for clubs.
  • To support the Head of Rowing in delivering Monkton’s co-curricular aims of breadth, participation and excellence.
  • Use passion, patience and sport specific knowledge to encourage all pupils to develop a lifelong love of sport and capitalise on their potential.
  • To support the maintenance and evolution of the boathouse. Experience of some manual handling, power tool use, basic shell/fitment maintenance, independent rigging appropriate to school age athletes would be highly desirable.
  • To support the Head of Rowing in building strategic relationships with local club/university programmes.

General

  • To support the Head of Rowing in delivering high quality coaching and training across participation and competition groups, in particular taking a lead on the junior age group (Yr9/10) and developing the key foundational skills in rowing that will allow all students to develop physically, race to a competitive level and stay healthy during the demanding training programme in their senior years at school.
  • To be available at weekends and evenings to support coaching, racing and associated transport
  • Support the Head of Rowing to actively promote Monkton Sport using Social Media, Monktonian, Newsletters etc.
  • Provide 1:1 coaching of students outside of their lessons where deemed appropriate by the Head of Rowing. This may include video analysis, personal development plans, strategic planning towards key competitions etc.
  • With support from the Head of Rowing, lead on the yr 9 enrichment activity across the school year. This will include planning a curriculum of introductory skills delivered in a logical order and leading on safety of the sessions following guidance in British Rowings Row Safe document.
  • Support the Director of Sport with any cross department initiatives as deemed necessary from time to time.
  • Experience of towing trailers would be desirable, in particular on the continent.
  • A PB2 licence would be desirable. Experience of driving motorboats would be essential.
  • A UKCC level 2 Sliding Seat Rowing Coaching qualification would be highly desirable with a L3 being desirable.
  • Any demonstrable experience of leading a group of rowers in an educational setting including the planning, delivery and review of a training programme and individual performance would be highly desirable.

Other

  • To be involved in the wider life of the school through boarding duties, tutoring etc.

Recreational Assistant (Lifeguard)

We are looking for Recreation Assistants to work at Monkton Leisure to assist with the day to day operations of the Sports Centre and associated facilities to ensure users have the best possible experience in terms of enjoyment, safety and hygiene.

If you're calm under pressure, this is your chance to develop as a Lifeguard. The successful candidate will have integrity, a can-do attitude and a real focus on customer service. You will be a great team player with knowledge of health and safety legislation and a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification.

Weekend Chef

8 hour shifts (plus breaks)
Saturday and/or Sunday 6am-2.30pm or 11.30am-7pm

We are looking for a weekend Chef to join our professional Catering Team at Monkton Combe School. This role will involve preparing meals for our boarding pupils based at Monkton Prep School. At times you will be the only Chef on duty and therefore we are looking for a highly motivated, self-starter who is excited to deliver high-quality meals with the help of our Front of House team.  

This is a term-time only role with the potential to support during the school holidays if you are looking for additional shifts. If you aren’t able to commit to every weekend but are interested in a casual position, please do still reach out. 

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure that all your food is prepared, cooked and presented to the highest possible standards.
  • Ensure that all menus are varied and offer a balanced diet and comply with the School’s Food and Healthy Eating Policy.
  • Ensure all food is prepared with due care and attention, particularly in regard to customers’ special dietary requirements and any allergies that may affect our customers / consumers
  • Pay particular attention to counter presentation throughout meal services and provide a supervisory presence.
  • Ensure all service staff are fully briefed before service commences and to have tasted the dishes on offer.
